Private layer 2 between any two datacentres.
EdgeXC is a point-to-point pseudowire delivered over the EdgeIX fabric — a managed private circuit between your ports at two different sites, or between you and another participant by mutual agreement. Metro circuits are available at every EdgeIX site; intercapital circuits are subject to available backbone capacity.
Layer 2, point-to-point, managed for you.
EdgeXC is a single service that hands off at layer 2 on either end and bridges the traffic between them — priced transparently, delivered over the EdgeIX fabric you already trust, with the same peer-first ethos.
Pass tagged VLANs, carry storage replication, interconnect your office edges — any traffic that runs on ethernet will run on EdgeXC.
At a glance
- ▸Layer 2 transparent — your tags, your MACs, your packets.
- ▸Metro everywhere — intercapital subject to capacity.
- ▸1G to 100G handoff options.
- ▸Jumbo frames (9,000 MTU max) end-to-end.
- ▸Rides your existing port — delivered as a separate 802.1Q VLAN alongside peering, no extra handoff needed.
What it's for.
A few of the most common ways networks deploy EdgeXC.
DC-to-DC site linking
Connect your racks in two different datacentres as if they were on the same VLAN. Ideal for active/standby, backup replication and split infrastructure.
Reach content, privately
Extend from a regional DC into a Tier-1 metro to reach content caches, cloud on-ramps or carriers without standing up a peering port.
Multi-site operators
Each EdgeXC connects a single pair of sites. Stack circuits to build hub-and-spoke or full-mesh topologies across your offices, edge DCs and branch racks.
Private inter-network links
Set up a private layer 2 connection between you and another EdgeIX participant — a managed alternative to physical cross-connects.
How it works.
- 1
Pick your endpoints
Choose any two EdgeIX-connected sites. We confirm availability — metro is always good to go, intercapital depends on backbone capacity.
- 2
Tell us the shape
Speed, VLAN mode (single-tag or transparent), handoff ports. For cross-participant circuits, both sides confirm.
- 3
We provision
Your EdgeXC is stood up on the EdgeIX backbone, tested, and turned up.
- 4
You run traffic
Pass layer 2 over the circuit like any other ethernet hand-off. Monitoring in the portal.
Availability.
Where EdgeXC can be delivered today — and what to check before ordering.
Metro / state
Local circuits within a single EdgeIX site or metro are always available. No capacity check required — order and we provision.
Intercapital
Circuits between EdgeIX capitals ride our national backbone. Subject to available capacity on the relevant path — we'll confirm for your endpoints before provisioning.
Pricing.
Two tiers depending on where your endpoints land on the fabric.
Local
Same infrastructure (metro / state)
Flat monthly price, regardless of bandwidth. Applies when both ends land on the same EdgeIX infrastructure — always available.
Ex GST · currency set by A-End location
Intercapital
Different infrastructure, between EdgeIX capitals
Bandwidth-priced circuits between EdgeIX capitals — e.g. Sydney ↔ Melbourne. Full pricing and volume discounts are shown in the IXP Manager portal.
Subject to available backbone capacity
Existing EdgeIX customers can order EdgeXC directly in the IXP Manager portal. Not a customer yet? Get in touch.
Technical specifications.
- Service type
- Layer 2 point-to-point pseudowire over the EdgeIX fabric
- Endpoints
- Any two EdgeIX-connected sites — your sites, or between you and another participant by mutual agreement. Metro always available; intercapital subject to backbone capacity.
- Encapsulation
- Single 802.1Q tag, or transparent (all tags passed) — both supported
- MTU
- 9,000 bytes maximum (jumbo frames supported; EdgeIX reserves headroom for backbone overhead)
- Port options
- 1G, 10G, 25G, 100G handoff — availability varies by site
- Bandwidth
- Symmetric, rate-limited to the contracted speed
- Delivery
- Metro circuits provisioned within standard lead times on existing EdgeIX-connected sites. Intercapital lead times depend on backbone capacity at time of order — confirmed at quote.
- Monitoring
- Service health visible in the EdgeIX portal; uptime and latency reported per circuit
